Devils Lake, ND  —  Today, the students and staff at Devils Lake High School will welcome back Magnus Fenes, the Norwegian exchange student who has inspired the entire school with his sudden illness and miraculous recovery.

Fenes collapsed last month during gym class with a life-threatening brain aneurism. Doctors determined it was caused by a tangle of abnormal blood vessels in his cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls movement and coordination. Doctors said his chances of survival were slim and, if the surgery was successful, he would face months of recovery.

On Friday afternoon, Fenes and his host family surprised students and staff by walking into the gymnasium during a routine awards ceremony.

One female student in the crowd whispered “Oh my God,” as tears began to well in her eyes.

Soon the entire crowd was on their feet cheering and Fenes stood silently in awe.
